The Harold Clurman Center for New Work in Movement and Dance Theater, or M.A.D., grew organically out of a profoundly talented movement department. Third year N.Y.U. students traditionally do a movement project in their fall term. This is a collaborative and created piece which is guided by a movement teacher who usually introduces the material or theme and then acts as director/choreographer. The work that has been produced has been vital, relevant and important. This new work can address contemporary issues with great immediacy. Divorced from a fixed text, it is free to use parts of texts or newspaper stories, magazine articles, etc. as a launch pad for its theatrical statement.
In an effort to create future audiences for Dance, Movement Theater, Performance Art and all live performance, The Harold Clurman Center for New Works in Movement and Dance Theater has implemented a summer residency program. M.A.D. member Steffany George, knowing that one of the biggest overhead costs when creating original work is the studio rental, thought that this residency, also known as MAD AIR (Movement and Dance Theater - Artist In Residence). So far MAD AIR has made possible new works by Stanley Love and Elisabeth Motley.
The Board of Advisors: Mimi Garrard, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Margie Gillis, Alexandra Wells, Yoshi Oida, and Bill T. Jones
