A Statement from Israel Horovitz, Lebensraum Playwright
I seem to spend a great deal of my life, these days, chasing my plays around the globe. No complaints, but, frankly, I never know what to expect when the curtain goes up. Normally, I have little or no input into rehearsals or even the casting of my plays, when they are done away from NYC (or Gloucester). At worst, a recent production in Athens, Greece featured nine nearly naked actors… in a play that I wrote to feature five fully clothed actors. At best, there are rare productions of my plays that are steadfastly faithful to my text, brilliantly acted and directed. Such is the case with the Harold Clurman Laboratory Theater’s production of my play Lebensraum. In September, 2010, I arrived at the tiny Lab theater at the Stella Adler Studio expecting a pleasant evening of theatre. What I got was an evening of raw power and brilliant transformational acting… theatrical magic. Seamlessly directed by Don K. Williams, Lebensraum stars Aidan Koehler, Adam Gerber and Mickey Ryan — three profoundly talented actors, who play some sixty different characters with skill and amazing grace. What I saw on stage was beyond thrilling. I am so glad to know that this wonderful production of my play will have a 2nd life at off-Broadway’s Abingdon Theatre Complex, this coming Autumn. I have seen dozens upon dozens of productions of Lebensraum in dozens of languages around the globe. I urge to see the Harold Clurman Laboratory Theater’s production at the Abingdon. It is among the very best I have ever seen.
