New York, NY – March 30, 2017: The Stella Adler Studio of Acting announced today four new appointments to its board of directors. The board welcomes Orange Is The New Black actress Lea DeLaria, Emmy Award-nominated screenwriter and producer Allan Neuwirth, and Harvard Kennedy School Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management Vincent Schiraldi and announced the appointment of longtime board member and OITNB actress Kate Mulgrew to the position of co-chair of the board.

“The Studio is thrilled to have these four talented, passionate individuals on our board,” said Tom Oppenheim, Artistic Director, Stella Adler Studio of Acting. “Lea, Kate, Vincent and Allan will help us continue to further the mission of the Studio as we embark on our next act.”

“It is an honor to be included in The Stella Adler Studio family,” said Lea DeLaria, Actor, Orange Is The New Black. “I firmly believe that music, art and theater can change the world.”

“I am pleased to serve on the board of the Stella Adler Studio and help this company continue its mission,” said Kate Mulgrew, Actor, Orange Is The New Black. “Stella taught me that art—particularly the art of acting—will lift us up only if it springs deeply, and truly, from our humanity. It is crucial that her message is carried forth with fearlessness, empathy and joy by the next generation of the studio’s crusaders.”

“The Studio is doing wonderful work that goes beyond traditional theater training,” said Allan Neuwirth, Emmy Award-nominated screenwriter and producer. “I look forward to helping spread the word about their Outreach Division and programs for underserved populations.”

“It is the Stella Adler Studio’s passion for social justice in concert with the incredible programming they provide to people who are incarcerated and disenfranchised that drives me to engage with this world-class, historically significant institution. I’m honored to take a seat on their board,” said Vincent Schiraldi, Senior Research Fellow and Director, Program in Criminal Justice Policy and Management, Harvard Kennedy School.

The Stella Adler Studio of Acting was founded in 1949 on the principle that growth as an actor and growth as a human being are synonymous. The mission of the Studio is to create an environment that nurtures theater artists and audiences so that they value humanity, their own and others, as their first priority while providing art and education to the greater community. The Stella Adler Studio of Acting’s Outreach Division works with numerous underserved populations including inner-city students, drug and rehabilitation centers and inmates on Rikers Island.
